Introducing Bayview/ Hunters’ Point Community Legal (BHPCL)

A group of recent USF Law alumni are starting a new legal services and community development non-profit up in the Bayview/ Hunters’ Point neighborhood of San Francisco: Bayview/ Hunters’ Point Community Legal (BHPCL). They will work outside the courtroom, providing legal services at minimal cost to neighborhood residents, in order to build community relationships and support local economic development projects.

In the United States, legal aid groups face overwhelming demand but have suffered a severe lack of funding. Similarly, local development groups attempt to challenge skyrocketing income and wealth inequality but are stymied by a lack of social capital.  BHPCL will attempt to bridge these gaps by providing a low-cost legal service that creates community relationships, and then leveraging those relationships to create income-generating local development projects.
